100m³ Coal Reception Pull-Floor Bunker

Juken Nissho Ltd, Kaitaia, New Zealand

Juken Nissho had purchased a new 20MW heat plant from Easteel Industries. In conjunction with this they required a fuel handling system that could handle either imported coal or wood waste generated from on-site processes.

Aerial Coal Bucket Project

Solid Energy

Solid Energy identified the need to increase the output of their coal transportation capacity on the Aerial Ropeway at their Ngakawau open cast mine site on the West Coast of the South Island.

BEL carried out a feasibility study for Solid Energy on the existing system and identified several areas, which would allow the existing Aerial Ropeway to increase its output by providing significant weight reductions from the existing coal buckets.

CHH Tasman Coal Hopper and Infeed Screw

Kawerau, New Zealand

CHH Tasman wished to improve the calorific value of wet fuel delivered to the Energy Plant at their Kawerau, New Zealand mill site.

Because of the trial nature of this Project any solution had to be low cost, yet robust enough to cope with the material being handled, plus fully flexible in terms of it’s throughput capabilities. BEL were contracted by CHH Tasman to design, manufacture and install a free-standing Hopper and Metering Screw capable of holding 18m3 of coal and delivering within a range of 0.6 – 8.0 t/hr.

Nelson Pine Industries Ltd is a world leader in the manufacture of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF). The company produces 400,000m3 of MDF panels per year in 168 size multiples. The board inspection operation required MDF board to feed though the system at 40 metres per minute.

Brightwater Engineers designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned the fully automatic board inspection and packaging system to meet the demands of the plant.

Veneer Line and LVL Press

Nelson Pine Industries Ltd is a world leader in the manufacture of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF). In 2000, NPIL announced the establishment of $80,000,000 in a Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) production facility.

Brightwater Engineers was awarded a single contract in 2 stages to carry out the mechanical installation and commissioning of the Veneer Line, Drier and Waste Handling equipment in the Veneer Building, and the Scarfer, LVL Layup, Press and Billet Handling Equipment in the LVL Building. The total scope of work involved over 40,000 man hours with a peak labour force of 35 Trades persons.

2,000m³ BIOMASS FUEL STORAGE BUNKER

Nelson Pine Industries LTD, Richmond, New Zealand

Nelson Pine Industries Ltd is the largest MDF plant in the World. A major expansion including a third MDF production line in 1997/98 involved the installation of an additional 38MW energy plant.

Brightwater Engineers designed, built and commissioned a 2,000m3 capacity Saxlund International push floor bunker. Fully automatic, the bunker feeds the three energy plants with hogged and screened biomass fuel at a rate of up to 25 tonnes per hour.

Push Floor Re-entry Bunkers

Hyne & Son PTY LTD, 35m³ Tuan Queensland, 90m³ Tumbarumba NSW

On two separate occasions, on different sites Hyne and Son required a facility to re-introduce fuel into existing fuel conveying systems. This requirement had arisen because of the “on site” generated wood waste fuel being produced at differing times to the fuel demands of the Heat Plants.

Claymark Industries, Rotorua, New Zealand

Claymark Industries in Rotorua is a major processor of dressed timber for overseas markets. Their operations generate up to 200m3 of dry wood shavings per day and this material was creating a significant disposal problem.

Brightwater Engineers designed, built and commissioned an 200m3 capacity Saxlund International sliding frame silo for the storage of dry shavings. The silo is portal mounted allowing an 80m3 capacity truck and trailer unit to drive beneath it and load out for disposal off site.

Claymark Katikati Biomass Fuel Management System

Claymark Katikati

The Claymark Katikati site is undergoing a major upgrade incorporating a new energy plant, kiln drying system and remanufacturing facility. The volume of sawdust produced by the existing mill was insufficient for the new 7MW Easteel Heatpac™ plant supplying energy to the Windsor drying kilns.

Brightwater Engineers have provided a flexible system that can use “imported fuels” as well as those generated by processes on site to give a wide range of fuel options.

Fuel Management System

CHH Pine Panels, Oberon, NSW, Australia

The new fuel managment system and heatplant were required to replace a thermal oil heater system that had been completely destroyed by fire in 2000.

The equipment installed by Brightwater included coarse fuel screening, dust screening, a fully enclosed dry fuel push floor bunker and a 90 cubic metre capacity elevated mixed fuel surge bunker situated close to the boiler plant.

Shavings Storage

McAlpines Ltd, Rangiora, New Zealand

McAlpines were already dumping wood shavings and the new planer mill they had purchased would increase this waste. It was decided to use the shavings as bio-fuel in the energy plant, in turn reducing the consumption of coal on site.

In association with Windsor Engineering Group, who supplied the shavings extraction and conveying system, BEL offered a 275 m3 storage silo complete with discharge screw. This would store the shavings and supply them as required to the boiler fuel feed system.

Laminex MDF Plant

Gympie, Queensland Australia

Laminex MDF plant near Gympie, Queensland Australia, required the replacement of their existing G1 Heat Energy Plant, which has been in production over 20 years.

The new heat energy plant had to be engineered to have a design life of 20 years, and would require being in production 360 days a year, 24 hours a day, with a target uptime of 99%.

Gold Processing Plant

In mid 2006 Brightwater were awarded contracts for the structural, mechanical and piping supply and installation scope for the new gold processing plant at Oceana Gold’s Globe Progress Gold Mine at Reefton, New Zealand.

Brightwater had previously been awarded the fabrication contract for all tanks, chutes and processing vessels which included a 20m diameter clarifier.

Plantation Pulpwood Terminals (PPT) Truck Dumpers and Chip Stacker

Albany W.A

PPT is a joint venture between Timbercorp and ITC who are plantation forest owners and managers and major chip exporters of mainly eucalyptus chips.

Brightwater contracted Rader Inc. of Atlanta as their partner to design a radial stacker with luffing boom which could automatically build up a 50,000 tonne stockpile of wood chips. Brightwater manufactured the stacker components and shipped them to WA.

JNL Gisborne En-masse Conveyors

As part of a recent plant upgrade JNL Gisborne required steep angle conveyors to convey wood chip and hogged veneer trim.

For the steep angle conveying application BEL manufactured & supplied Model CW En-Masse conveyors. The CW conveyors are typically configured in an “S” shape arrangement and this enables horizontal inlet and outlet positions for improved conveying transitions, while still achieving steep angle conveying.

BE 85 Yarder

Forestry Equipment

The largest model in Brightwater’s range, the BE 85 has an 85ft telescoping tower, with eight hydraulic guy winches.

The unit is mounted on a purpose built track base, with two speeds and can negotiate grades up to 50 per cent. Setup and relocation is quick and efficient. The yarder can log a full 170 degrees from one setup, ensuring maximum time harvesting.
