Brightwater Yarders
Yarders have a long history in the New Zealand bush and forests. Horses and bullocks were used for logging of native forests until steam driven winches or steam haulers came into use. More than 500 haulers worked in the New Zealand bush and most were NZ manufactured and steam powered. Haulers were replaced by dozers beginning in the 1930s and by the 1950s, haulers were displaced by tracked diesel equipment.

Modern yarders were developed in the 1970s and 1980s with more than 50 percent of all harvesting currently carried out with yarders: more than 170 are operating throughout New Zealand, harvesting some nine million cubic metres per annum.
